Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of conditions of the joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves of the body, particularly of the spine. Chiropractors take an integrated and holistic approach to the health needs of their patients considering the physical, psychological and social factors. Chiropractors provide care for patients of all ages who present with a range of acute and chronic conditions. Chiropractors are also trained to take x-rays and are able to read many different types of imaging modalities (MRI, CT, X-ray).

About Chiropractic:

Chiropractic is an effective method of detecting loss of function in the spine and joints, which, if left untreated can interfere with the healthy working of your nervous system.

The central nervous system is the great controlling system of the body, formed by the brain and spinal cord.

While the brain is encased by the skull, the spinal cord is more vulnerable, protected by 24 moving vertebrae.

When the joints between each vertebrae lose their normal range of motion, they can irritate the delicate nerves that exit from the spinal cord. This can disrupt the function of the tissues or organs these nerves control and may affect the body's natural ability to recover from injury, decrease resistance to disease and lower your performance level.

Chiropractic is the science of locating these areas of spinal dysfunction and the art of correcting them to enhance the body's innate healing mechanism.

Once the condition is stable and you are able to return to your normal activities, regular check ups with your chiropractor will reduce the risk of recurrence and can help to improve your general well being.

Your First Visit:

Your first visit will last between 40 minutes to an hour and will include a full consultation and examination by one of our Chiropractors. During the consultation your chiropractor will take an in depth history of the events surrounding your presenting complaint. Lifestyle factors will also be taken into account, as well as your past health history.

We will endeavor to keep all our patients details strictly confidential, and ensure that your medical history is kept between you and your chiropractor.

Following the consultation your chiropractor will perform a thorough physical examination, including a postural assessment, orthopaedic, neurological and medical tests. Your Chiropractor may require you to undress to your underwear for your examination, but a gown will be provided.

Before treatment starts your chiropractor will explain your examination findings, diagnosis and treatment plan. Your Chiropractor will also go through the basic anatomy of the spine and how your condition can affect your nervous system and overall well being.

Treatment:

Treatment is not only focused towards symptomatic relief but usually includes attention to underlying cause, lifestyle factors and of course, prevention. Treatment consists of a wide range of manual techniques, which are tailored specifically to an individual. In order to maximise progress, the patient plays an active role in their care. This may include, exercise, stretching and even nutritional guidance. Chiropractic does not involve the use of drugs or surgery, although advice may sometimes be given. Patients usually respond well to care however, due to the differing severity of conditions and duration of pain, the time scale does vary from one individual to the next. Many go on to use Chiropractic as a preventative treatment, which is termed, 'Wellness care'.
